After much extensive research, I've learned EMF hazards are all around us and exposure beyond the "legal" limits happen far more than the public realizes. In fact, Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) (sometimes referred to as  Electrical Sensitivity (ES) or Microwave Sickness) is a condition in which a person experiences adverse health effects (and loss of a stable internal environment in the presence of man-made EMF's) have reportedly been on the rise.

The invisible pollution from our modern world of electrical and technological devices is commonly referred to as Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) or Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR). In simple terms, EMFs are forms of energy that move through space as waves.


They are part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which ranges from extremely low-frequency fields (like those from power lines) to high-frequency radiation (like 5G signals).

When people hear the word "radiation," they often think of nuclear accidents or medical X-rays. But not all radiation is created equal, and understanding the difference is key to navigating the modern world.


Science broadly categorizes radiation into two types:

  • Ionizing Radiation (high-energy): Strong enough to knock electrons off atoms, damaging DNA directly like a microscopic bullet. Examples include gamma rays, X-rays, and radioactive decay.

The Role of the Building Biology Institute


This is why organizations like the Building Biology Institute (BBI) exist. Born from the German field of Baubiologie (building biology), the BBI emerged in the U.S. in the 1980s to answer one central question: How do our built environments affect our health?


The BBI developed the SBM Guidelines, which set exposure standards based not on industry convenience, but on biological research. Unlike government thresholds—which are often millions of times higher—the BBI guidelines classify EMF exposures into four categories:


  • No Concern
     
  • Slight Concern
     
  • Severe Concern
     
  • Extreme Concern
     

For instance:


  • Government agencies may say a Wi-Fi signal strength of 10,000 µW/m² is safe.
     
  • The BBI’s “slight concern” threshold begins around 10 µW/m² — nearly a million times lower — because biological effects have been observed at these levels.
     

The existence of the BBI highlights a sobering truth:
